Portrait of a princess

"Portrait of a Princess" was a poster-sized illustration, the seventh Butterfly Princess drawing by David Graham Edwards, and the first to establish in printed form the wealth of information that had been developed about the character and world up to that point. It served as the impetus for the first novel, A Butterfly's Tale, the following year.

It depicts Mariposa battling an unseen foe, with text surrounding her that documents a brief history of butterfly people, their culture, and their relationship to other races.

This illustration (created by the artist/writer for his wife) was less elaborate than previous years, giving the creator time to work on an action figure version of Mariposa.

Art elements from this illustration were used in 2020 for the front cover of A Butterfly's Tale: The Junior Novel.
