The Butterfly Queen was the former ruler of the butterfly grotto in the Darklands. Shortly before her daughter, the butterfly princess, was to come of age, the queen began suffering from a malady caused by the dark energy radiating from her traditional bloodrock accoutrements. She began manifesting an insanity that threatened the lives and safety of the other butterfly colony members. Fearing for her kin, the butterfly princess stood up to the queen, and was forced to kill her.
Some 200 years later, Mariposa related the story of the Butterfly Queen, revealing why Mariposa would always be a butterfly princess and would never ascend to the rank of Queen herself.
